ADVENT SERVICE OF LESSONS AND CAROLS

Canto Deo Chamber Choir to Offer Advent Service of Lessons and Carols

The Canto Deo Chamber Choir will present its Advent Service of Lessons and Carols at Bethany Lutheran Church on Sunday, November 29, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. The same service will be offered the evening before, Saturday, November 28, at 7:00 p.m., at Holy Ghost Church in downtown Denver.

For nearly two decades Canto Deo has opened the season with this quiet, ancient pattern of Scripture and song. The service begins in hushed expectation with a soul-deep question that has echoed through the Church for centuries: “Art thou he that should come to reign over thy people, Israel?” From that first petition the lessons unfold the long story of promise—heavens called to drop down righteousness, the earth summoned to bring forth its Redeemer, Zion standing at her shining gates, Adam bound in the garden yet blessed in the fullness of time, a tender shoot rising from the stump of Jesse, the angel’s greeting to the highly favored one, and the final cry that the Lord would come quickly, even so, with clouds descending.

The music does not merely accompany these words; it gives them voice. Plainsong and medieval carol, Reformation hymn and newly composed anthem speak of dew falling from above, of a Virgin’s womb made the gate of heaven, of joy breaking forth in the feast of the Incarnation, and of the Church’s longing both for the Child who has come and for the King who will come again. Old texts and new settings mingle so that the ear may hear, across the centuries, the same hope: that the Word made flesh still draws near.

This is not a concert but a service of waiting. It invites those who gather to slow their pace, to listen to the Word, and to let the heart answer. No tickets are required. Parishioners of Bethany Lutheran and all who seek a space of Advent stillness are warmly welcome at either church as the season of promise begins.

Canto Deo looks forward to sharing this Advent service of Lessons and Carols with the Bethany community.
